Reconstructive microsurgery

Reconstructive microsurgery

It is difficult to imagine plastic surgery nowadays without the use of microsurgical techniques. The term “microsurgery” includes a large variety of reconstructive techniques but the basic concept is that by magnifying, with a lens or special microscope, tiny anatomical structures they can be seen in a large enough size to be manipulated. Thanks to micro-vascular and nervous anastomoses, it is currently possible to transfer tissue from one part of the body to another without losing functionality. This type of surgery requires further specific training as a plastic surgeon, and must not be performed by inexperienced hands.
Microsurgery is used in post-mastectomy mammary reconstruction, in the reconstruction of traumatic limbs, for face and neck reconstruction, in the reconstruction of defects caused in the treatment of skin tumours or to treat lymphedema, to state some examples.
The team of MR Plastic Surgery is highly trained and has extensive experience in the implementation of these surgical techniques, which will depend on the patient and the problem to be treated.
